What to consider in Twitter writing

There are many things to consider when Tweeting

There are several things people should keep in mind when writing for Twitter.  Because tweets can only be 140 characters, tweets should be as succinct as possible.  Tweets should also be relevant to the specific goals of the company who owns the account.  Writers should be aware of their posting schedule; too many posts could lead to people unfollowing the account, and too little posts could lead to people losing interest.  Writers need to be aware of the feedback their tweets receive, as these are some of the most direct and concise responses to marketing one can get.  Lastly, writers should be aware of the people trying to engage in dialogue with the account and try to actively engage their followers.

Tweet effectively with these tips

While a simple social media tool to use, there are a few guidelines one should follow when using Twitter.  Tweets should be scheduled in a way that does not overwhelm followers’ Twitter feeds.  Tweets should be used to primarily promote positive news and link to any relevant sites.  Twitter can be used effectively as a live reporting tool during events and meetings.  Engaging followers is also a great way to maintain a loyal following; dialogue allows followers to feel included in a company’s mission and culls positive responses.  Tweets should, of course, be used to link to a main site; if people are following a company on Twitter, links to the company’s website will surely be clicked, driving traffic to the site.

Ways Twitter can be used as a marketing tool

June 10th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

Twitter marketing is often very simple

One way Twitter can be used as a marketing tool is by using it as a newsfeed for all internal and external news about a company.  Twitter’s format allows news to be disseminated quickly and easily to both followers and casual observers.  This allows a company to supply followers with a steady stream of media attention pertaining exclusive to itself.  Twitter’s privacy settings also allow companies to use the site as a way to offer incentives to followers.  By making tweets private, companies can provide exclusive content or offers to followers, thereby rewarding them for following a company’s account and potentially boasting their number of followers.

Benefits of Twitter in the music industry

Twitter can offer a lot of marketing benefits

A music label could substantially benefit from using Twitter.  There are many things that could be posted using Twitter’s simple format: new bands signed; news and reviews of albums released by the label; tour dates of bands signed to the label; and news related either directly or indirectly to the label.  Bands signed to the label could also provide updates through the label’s Twitter account.  It would also provide the label with an easy platform to interact directly with fans through @ replies.  This would allow questions and comments to be received easily, and rapid, personalized responses to be given.

Tips for Effective Twitter Marketing

May 25th, 2010 § 0 comments § permalink

TinyURLs are a very useful tool for Twitter marketing because of their ability to fit within Twitter's 140 character limit without taking a large amount of character space.

Tips for Effective Twitter Marketing, #1: Get Straight to the Point – Don’t waste character space prefacing or elaborating on details of the subject of your announcement.  Twitter is designed for simple posts that get straight to the heart of the matter and sum it up in as few words as possible.

Tips for Effective Twitter Marketing, #2: Choose Your Words Wisely – Because you will be using fewer words to make your announcement, the weight of each word you choose is much greater than it would typically be with a standard blog-length post.  Therefore, you will want to use extra care in choosing words that are appealing and that represent you and your company the way that you want people to see you.

Tips for Effective Twitter Marketing, #3: How to Post URLs – Because you are limited to 140 character spaces for every Twitter announcement, you will want to avoid posting long URLs that take up a large portion of this character space.  Services such as TinyURL allow for the shortening of URLs to make them more compatible for SMS style writing and can be quite useful for Twitter.

Tips for Effective Twitter Marketing, #4: Make Connections – Making connections via Twitter differs from Facebook in that connections made through Twitter often do not imply or entail the same level of personal connection.  Making Twitter connections is more similar to subscribing to a YouTube channel or mailing list in that you can choose to follow any page to start receiving instant updates as long as the owner of the account has their settings such that it is made available for your viewing.

Tips for Effective Twitter Marketing, #5: Keep Track of Your Reputation – It is generally a good idea to stay on top of the latest comments other users are posting regarding your company to gauge how successfully you are promoting the image you want for your company.  One way to make this easier is to follow people who you find writing about your company, so you can allow their feed to update you on the latest word among consumers regarding your company’s reputation.

What Writers Should Be Aware of When Writing for Twitter

Twitter

Being that you cannot write more than 140 words, you must choose your words carefully and make sure they are compelling. Include links to the company website to pull followers into specific areas you want to share.

Press releases and news articles can be shared if you draw the reader into the website.

A live feed of an event can be streamed via RSS feed to followers. It is important to keep the interest of your readers with fresh ideas and activities.

Invite dialogue, set up an area for comments. People love to exchange ideas, make it inviting for them to do so.

The “communication stream of ideas” is what Twitter is all about, start the flow with the way that you write.

Use Twitter to Grow Your Business

October 2nd, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

Although Twitter was originally intended created to allow individuals to communicate with each other, many companies have found ways to use it for business purposes. Different companies use Twitter in different ways and for different purposes however they’ve all gone beyond simple tweets that announce what someone is eating for breakfast. Some companies simply read tweets to get some indirect feedback while others actively engage in discussion with current and potential clients. There are a few different ways that you can use Twitter to help grow your business, regardless of size.

You may want to treat twitter just like you would a more traditional blog in which you post information, announce sales/promotions, give product/service details, make corporate announcements, etc. These tweets can also contain links back to your site or blog. Keep in mind that all tweets are indexed by Google so you don’t want to say anything that could negatively impact you or your business.

Using the Twitter search function, you can seek out any Twitter users who have mentioned your company, products, or services and then you can communicate directly with them using an “@ reply”. Make sure that these messages are personalized and helpful so that they are not dismissed as spam.

There are many sites out there that track trends on Twitter and can be used to get an idea of what products of services consumers are interested in. Sites like these can be very valuable for retailers, especially around holiday seasons. If a store can identify a product that appears to be a “must have,” they can stock up on it and target their advertising efforts towards those products (and of course, Tweet about the product).

What other ways has your business been using Twitter?

Using Social Media to boost your Online Presence

September 16th, 2009 § 0 comments § permalink

Social network marketing is a relatively new field that is becoming more main stream as an increasing number of companies recognize its value. Social media sites allow companies to interact directly with their potential clients and to develop long term relationships. There are many large social networking sites out there and new ones are launched every day. Some of the main social media applications that all companies should consider using are Twitter, Facebook, Digg, YouTube, and some sort of blog.

Twitter allows businesses to directly send and receive short messages between any twitter user in the world. “Tweets” sent out by a company are indexed by search engines and can be seen by anyone searching for a particular item or service. Also, companies can use Twitter to send out real time updates regarding promotions, inventory shipments, new products and much more. There is no cost to use Twitter and the direct feedback that users around the world provide can be priceless to many businesses.

Similarly, Facebook can be used to directly interact with existing and potential customers and could also be used to showcase products, get reviews, and create buzz about a new product launch. Facebook also offers a convenient and effective ad platform that allows for highly targeted delivery.

Digg is a social media site that helps people discover and share content from anywhere on the web, by submitting links/stories, and then voting and commenting on submitted links/stories. It can be a great source of new traffic to your site if your submission is popular among Digg users.

A blog, as well as a YouTube channel, can be very beneficial when trying to create excitement for a new product or service and also to simply bring in more traffic to your site. As long as you create quality content that people want to read or see, they will keep coming back to you page and will surely check out your main site as well (make sure that you post your URL wherever possible).

These are only a few of the many social media avenues out there but represent a massive following. Start with these and then branch out into other, more niche, networks.
