The Evolution of SEO
Though there are numerous important dates in SEO history, following I feel are more significant than the others.
Date: Nov 27, 2002 – On this day Yahoo adopted a new method to display search results performed through Yahoo.com. Earlier by paying certain amount to Yahoo, a website could appear at top of the search results page. However, seeing its sinking popularity among internet users, the company was forced to back off on this strategy, and why? Users were not getting relevant results. This increased the complexity of SEO for websites and work of SEO experts.
Date: March 24, 2008 – On this day Google, the god of search engines acquired DoubleClick, a search engine marketing firm. Now one may wonder why a company like Google would enter into a niche which would upset SEO and SEM firms. The answer is obvious, Google knows its indexing secrets, and imagine a SEO firm which knows all the secrets of SEM and SEO. The combination would give rise to a SEO behemoth, which will supersede all of its competition.

W3Catalog – Sep 2,1993:
The web’s first primitive search engine W3Catalog was released by Oscar Nierstrasz at the university of Geneva. Oscar wrote a series of Perl scripts that would periodically take the mirror images of the web pages and rewrite them into a standard format to form the basis for W3Catalog. This was the period that made statistics to come up with various SEO methodologies.

Google – Sep 4,1998:
Larry page and Sergey Brin founded Google when they were the students at Stanford University. On this day, Google was considered a first private held company that attracted more people towards search engines. Google plays a major role in developing and implementing the latest SEO technicalities.

During the late 90′s, the Internet was ablaze. Users, contributors and regulators (such as they were) were struggling to wrap their minds around this fast moving force. The following historical milestones were pivotal in the development of Search Engine Optimization, a key tool in learning to work with, and through, the Internet.
1997 – The term “search engine optimization” is thought to have been coined. The creation of this term indicates the growing need for indexing and categorizing the exponentially growing amount of content on the Internet. Further, those who wanted to make sure to get their message in front of readers started employing both ethical and unethical tactics of search engine optimization to fight through the crowds for visibility.
1998 – Google is founded. In 1998, no one could have thought that Google would become such an important part of almost every Internet user’s life. It would become a verb, not just a noun. Google created algorithms to search for important and relevant content and bring that to its users. Google was able to circumnavigate some of the pitfalls that allowed other search engines to be tricked or tripped up on irrelevant information.

On January 8th, 2002, Marketingprofs.com posted an article entitled, “Search Engine Marketing: Can You Afford Not To?” The article discusses how most marketing strategists neglect SEO in their plans, and how only 24 percent of e-businesses receive a majority of their traffic from search engines. This article is notable because it demonstrates a keen awareness of the power SEO and how underutilizing it may result in lost business. Another article written on November 14th, 2006 on Businessweek.com talks about blogging as an SEO tool. The article highlights AOL’s Ted Leonsis and how by posting frequently, linking to other sites, and mentioning celebrities he made his blog the second search result in search engines, right after his corporate biography. The article demonstrates how blogging is an easy and informal way of good SEO, and how individuals and businesses can gain great search engine visibility through blogs.
